How to file an EPF e-nomination online
The UAN portal process end to end, including the Aadhaar e-sign that decides whether it counts and the pension nomination people skip.
It is not optional in any practical sense. Without a valid nomination, a claim after a member's death has to establish entitlement through documentation, which takes far longer and is far more contested than a nomination on file.
On this page
An EPF e-nomination is filed on the EPFO unified member portal, under Manage, then e-Nomination. The whole process takes a few minutes, and it ends with an Aadhaar based e-sign that is the step most people miss.
That last step decides everything. A nomination that has been filled in and saved but never e-signed is not a completed nomination, and EPFO does not treat it as one. If you filed a nomination at some point and never saw a completion status, it is worth logging in and checking rather than assuming it is on record.
What has to be in place first
The portal will refuse the nomination screen rather than explain why, so check these before you start:
- An activated UAN, with a password you can log in with.
- Aadhaar verified against that UAN. Not merely entered, verified.
- A complete member profile, including a photograph. An incomplete profile blocks the nomination flow.
- Access to the mobile number registered against your Aadhaar, because the e-sign OTP goes there and nowhere else.
- Details for each nominee: name, relationship, date of birth and Aadhaar, plus a photograph where asked.
If the portal itself is refusing to load or is throwing errors before you get this far, our guide on what each EPFO portal error means covers which failures are genuine outages and which are something you can fix.
Filing it, step by step
- Log in to the unified member portal with your UAN and password.
- Check your profile. Open the profile section, confirm the details are complete and a photograph is present.
- Open e-Nomination from the Manage menu.
- Declare family details. Say whether you have a family as EPFO defines it, then add each member with name, relationship, date of birth and Aadhaar.
- Set the provident fund shares. Select which family members are nominated and give each a percentage. The total has to reach 100 percent.
- Complete the pension nomination. EPS nomination is recorded separately in the same flow.
- Save and generate the PDF.
- E-sign with Aadhaar. Complete the Aadhaar based e-sign using the OTP sent to your Aadhaar linked mobile number.
- Verify the status. Go back into e-Nomination and confirm it reads as completed.
Why the pension nomination is worth its own attention
The provident fund balance and the EPS pension are two different entitlements with two different nomination records. Members routinely complete the first, see a success message, and leave the second untouched.
The consequences differ too. The provident fund balance is a sum of money that a nominee can claim. The pension is a stream of payments to eligible family members, and the rules on who is eligible are set by the scheme rather than purely by your nomination. Completing both is the only way to have said what you intended about each.
When to file it again
A nomination stays in force until it is replaced. Filing a fresh e-nomination supersedes the earlier one, and there is no limit on how often you can do it. The events that should prompt a fresh one are the obvious ones:
- Marriage. A nomination made before marriage frequently names parents or siblings and simply stays there.
- The birth of a child.
- A death in the family, particularly of a named nominee.
- A divorce.
None of these update the record on their own.
The mistakes that leave a nomination invalid
- Saving the form completes the nomination. It does not. Without the Aadhaar e-sign, the nomination is incomplete and EPFO will not act on it.
- The PF nomination covers the pension too. They are separate records filed in the same flow. Doing one does not do the other.
- A nomination made with an old employer still applies. The nomination is held against your UAN rather than against an employer, so it travels with you. What does not travel is a nomination you made on paper years ago that was never digitised. Check the portal rather than assume.
- You can nominate anyone you like. Nomination is made from family as the scheme defines it. A nomination in favour of someone outside that definition, while family exists, does not hold.
- Shares can add up to whatever you want. They must total 100 percent, and the form will not save otherwise.
Common questions
Is EPF e-nomination compulsory?
It is not optional in any practical sense. Without a valid nomination, a claim after a member's death has to establish entitlement through documentation, which takes far longer and is far more contested than a nomination on file.
What do I need before I can file it?
An activated UAN, Aadhaar verified against that UAN, a completed member profile with a photograph, and access to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar for the OTP.
Can I nominate more than one person?
Yes. You can add several nominees and set a percentage share for each, as long as the shares add up to 100 percent.
Can I change a nomination later?
Yes. Filing a fresh e-nomination replaces the earlier one. This matters after a marriage, a birth or a death in the family, because the earlier nomination stays in force until you replace it.
Is the PF nomination the same as the pension nomination?
No. The provident fund nomination and the EPS pension nomination are recorded separately in the same flow. Completing one and not the other is a common and consequential mistake.
