How much HRA can I claim?
Work out the exempt portion of your house rent allowance under the three-part test.
Nothing here asks for your PAN
Figures checked against the official source on 26 July 2026. Section 10(13A). The formula is set in the Act and does not change with the Budget. This is an estimate for guidance, not a statement of what you owe.
The three-part test
Section 10(13A) exempts the least of three amounts: the HRA you actually received, 50 percent of basic plus DA in a metro or 40 percent elsewhere, and the rent you paid minus 10 percent of basic plus DA. Whichever is smallest is your exemption. Everything above it is taxable salary.
What people get wrong about this
Most people use their full salary instead of basic plus DA, which inflates the second and third figures and produces an exemption they cannot actually claim. Basic is often only 40 to 50 percent of CTC, so the difference is large.
The other frequent error is assuming a big HRA component guarantees a big exemption. If your rent is low, the third test caps you regardless of what your payslip says.
