Which tax regime is better for me?
Compare both regimes on your actual salary and deductions, for FY 2026-27.
Nothing here asks for your PAN
Figures checked against the official source on 26 July 2026. Budget 2026 left the Budget 2025 slabs unchanged for FY 2026-27. This is an estimate for guidance, not a statement of what you owe.
How the two regimes differ
The new regime is the default. It applies lower slab rates but removes almost every deduction, keeping only the standard deduction of 75,000 rupees for salaried people. The old regime keeps the deductions and charges more per slab.
Because the new regime rebate under section 87A now runs up to 12 lakh of taxable income, most people earning under that pay nothing at all under the new regime, whatever their deductions.
What people get wrong about this
The commonest mistake is comparing the slab rates alone. Rates are only half the picture: what matters is tax on your taxable income after whichever deductions each regime allows. A person with a large home loan and rent can still be better off under the old regime even though every one of its rates is higher.
The second mistake is forgetting that the standard deduction applies under both regimes for salaried income. It is not an old regime benefit.
