How to renew your driving licence online
Renew within a year of expiry and it costs the same as renewing on time, with no test. Miss that year and you start over as a fresh applicant.
You can renew a driving licence up to a year before it expires or up to a year after, through the Sarathi Parivahan portal, without retaking any test. A medical certificate, Form 1A, is required if you are 40 or older or hold a commercial licence. Let it lapse for more than a year and the renewal window closes, the only option left is applying as a fresh licence.

A driving licence can be renewed up to a year before it expires or up to a year after, through the Sarathi Parivahan portal, and neither timing requires retaking a test. What does require attention is the one-year cutoff itself: let a licence lapse beyond that, and the renewal route closes completely, leaving only a fresh application, learner’s licence and test included, as the way back.
What decides whether you need a medical certificate
Form 1A, a certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner, is required if you are 40 or older, or if you hold or are applying for a commercial or transport licence, regardless of age. Below 40 on a private, non-commercial licence, a self-declaration generally covers it instead. Getting this certificate arranged before starting the online application avoids the process stalling partway through, waiting on a document you have not yet obtained.
The renewal process itself
Start at the Sarathi Parivahan portal and select your state, since the process and exact fees are managed at the state level even though the underlying rules are national. Many states now offer Aadhaar-based faceless renewal, an OTP verification that pulls your existing photograph and details without requiring an RTO visit at all. This fails most commonly when your Aadhaar name does not exactly match your licence record, or when your Aadhaar is not linked to a working mobile number, in which case you fall back to booking an in-person slot for fingerprint and photo capture.
The fee is roughly 200 rupees for a standard non-transport licence and around 1,000 rupees for a transport licence, though it varies slightly by state, worth checking on your own state’s portal before paying. Once approved, the renewed licence is valid immediately and downloadable from Sarathi or DigiLocker, the physical smart card typically follows by post within one to two weeks.
The one year cutoff, and why it matters more than it looks
Renewing on time and renewing eleven months late go through essentially the same process, at essentially the same cost, with no test involved either way. This surprises people who assume a lapsed licence means starting over immediately, it does not, the grace period is genuinely a full year.
What changes past that year is total. The renewal application itself stops being an option, and the only route back to driving legally is applying as a new licence holder, learner’s licence, the mandatory waiting period, and the driving test again. The difference between renewing on day 364 after expiry and day 366 is the difference between a form and a fee versus starting the entire licensing process over.
A worked example
Vikram’s licence expired in March while he was preoccupied with a job change, and he did not get around to renewing it until October, seven months later. Because he was still within the one year window, the process was identical to an on-time renewal: since he is 44, he needed Form 1A, which he got from his family doctor, uploaded it along with his existing licence details through Sarathi’s faceless verification, and paid the standard fee. No test, no penalty beyond his own inconvenience of driving on an expired licence in the meantime, which is itself a separate risk worth avoiding regardless of the renewal grace period.
What people get wrong about this
Assuming an expired licence means immediate re-testing. It does not, within the one year window. The anxiety around a lapsed licence is usually worse than the actual process of fixing it.
Not realising the one year cutoff is a hard stop, not a soft guideline. There is no appeal or extension once it passes. If a licence has been expired for close to a year, renewing sooner rather than later is worth prioritising.
Skipping the medical certificate check. Assuming it is not needed, only to have the application rejected partway through for missing Form 1A, adds a delay that a five-minute check beforehand would have avoided.
Driving on an expired licence while waiting to get around to renewal. Even within the grace year for renewal purposes, driving on an expired licence carries its own separate legal risk in the meantime, our vehicle document checker covers what you need valid at all times, licence included.

Common questions
How long can I wait after my licence expires before renewing?
Up to one year, at the same process and largely the same fee as renewing on time, with no driving test required. Some states apply a small late fee once you are past the expiry date even within that year, so check your specific state's fee schedule rather than assume it is identical to renewing early.
What happens if I let it lapse for more than a year?
The renewal route closes entirely. You have to apply as though for a fresh licence, which means the learner's licence and test process again, not a shortcut back to where you left off.
Do I need a medical certificate every time I renew?
Only if you are 40 or older, or if you hold a commercial or transport licence. Below that age, on a private non-commercial licence, a self-declaration is generally sufficient instead.
Can I renew without visiting an RTO at all?
In many states, yes, through Aadhaar-based faceless verification. It depends on your Aadhaar details matching your licence record and having a linked mobile number for the OTP. If that fails, an in-person visit for biometrics becomes necessary.
Can I renew in a different state from where my licence was originally issued?
Generally yes, provided your current address proof matches the state you are applying from. If you have also moved permanently, updating your address at the same time is usually possible in the same application.
